Office cubicles are found nearly in every administrative office today in virtually every single part of the world. Office cubicles form the perfect base office infrastructure for IT offices, call centers, customer service centers, telemarketing organizations and the like. While some of these office cubicles provide quite a fancy appearance and offer the look of a posh office atmosphere, many of the even fancy looking office cubicles are generally a low cost alternative to building individual offices for each and every person working in the office. There are a variety of office cubicle designs and decor available with colors that range from bland gray to darker shades.

There has always been a question as to where did the office cubicle design originate from. In the early days of industrialization and automation, offices generally had desks and chairs either barely laid out in straight rows one behind the other or in rows with each desk facing the opposing desk. The higher level officials were all given individual offices offering complete privacy for its occupants. As real estate prices started creeping up especially in the metropolitan areas such as London, New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Bombay, Paris and the like, the cost of office space steadily rose as well. This resulted in smaller offices built for the personnel. In the 1960s, it became pretty cumbersome to build smaller and smaller offices for the higher end officers of the company and there came a need for an alternative design for the efficient use of office space and the office cubicle was born.

The early designs of office cubicles were anything but comfortable. The early office cubicles were nothing but a couple of strips of steel rods with dull fabric double folded and laid out between the metal strips. They were pretty ugly to look at and offered little more than a simple physical barrier to the personnel. Nevertheless, these early office cubicles were an immediate reprieve to the office administrators who were under pressure to design office space that would lead to lower per person cost. The modern office cubicle designs however are quite elegant with electrical power strips, data ports storage shelving, fancier fabric designs with some that even boast of acoustical inserts between the fabrics. The last forty to fifty years have seen tremendous advancements in office cubicle design that leaves the office personnel with greater privacy and ambiance that allows them to carry out their office duties in a more efficient manner.
